Tournament History

The tournament was first held in 2002 at the Madrid Tennis Center. It was originally classified as an ATP Masters Series event before being upgraded to Masters 1000 status in 2009. The current tournament venue is the Caja Mágica (Magic Box), which was built in 2009 and has a capacity of over 12,000 spectators.
